There are tons of reasons to get married in any season. No one season is better than another, but if you’re thinking about a winter wedding, let’s talk about why you should get married in the winter!
As a wedding photographer I see lots of weddings and how the seasons affect each one. I also notice the pros and cons to getting married in every season. These are things you may not consider, and my intention is to help you decide which season is best for you to say “I do!”
FIRST LET’S TALK ABOUT THE PROS AND WHY YOU SHOULD GET MARRIED IN THE Winter!
Snow is Magical!
Snow is pretty polarizing; you either love it or you hate it, BUT regardless, it calls for amazing pictures! There is so much you can do with snow for your wedding photos. You also won’t have to worry about your makeup running due to hot weather!
You can have a Christmas Wedding!
Trust me, you can have a Christmas wedding without it looking cheap and tacky. You can play off the red and green theme, or go for gold, ivory, and black. You can also do a snowy and blue wedding for Christmas. There are so many options, and if done correctly, your wedding will wow your guests!
More vendor availability!
Winter is often a slower time for wedding vendors in the Boise, Idaho area. This means your dream venue or photographer is more likely to be available! Some vendors will even offer off-season rates.
It’s unique!
The majority of people getting married in the Treasure Valley do so the other 3 seasons of the year. Getting married in the winter may ensure that your friends and family are available to come! Also, you probably won’t share a wedding date with 8 of your friends.
Perfect time for black tie!
Winter is the perfect time to dress up. If you’ve dreamed of a black tie event for your wedding, definitely consider getting married December – February! Imagine the floor-length dresses, the sparkly shoes, the tuxes, and the updo’s that your guests would arrive in!
NOW THAT WE TALKED ABOUT THE PROS, LET’S EXPLORE WHY YOU MAY WANT TO GET MARRIED IN A DIFFERENT SEASON (AKA, THE CONS).
The weather
Just as the weather is a huge pro (especially for pictures), it is also a con. However unlikely, it’s still a possibility that there could be a blizzard on your big day. This could complicate things for you and your vendors.
Early sunset
If you’re hoping for any outdoor photos, make sure you work with your photographer to get all those photos done early in the day before the sun sets. If your ceremony is planned for later in the day, I HIGHLY recommend a first look!
You want an outdoor wedding
Obviously, you can brave the cold, or opt for a short elopement, but typically, if you want an outdoor wedding, you’ll probably want to get married during a different season!
FINALLY, SOME TIPS TO MAKE YOUR Winter WEDDING A HUGE SUCCESS!
Purchase a fur coat or fur stole, like this one from Lulu’s, to add class and warmth to your wedding dress
Have someone come with you for photos to throw snow if it’s not actively snowing
Serve hot chocolate, coffee, or tea at your reception to help warm your guests
Wear boots under your dress for walking through the snow
